From 1 January through 26 November 2019, countries in the Pacific Islands are experiencing outbreaks including Tonga (310 cases), Fiji (10 cases), American Samoa (4 imported cases from Apia, Samoa), and Samoa with 2,437 cases and 32 associated deaths.
New Zealand: 2084 confirmed cases as of 20 November, of which 80% are in Auckland.
Australia: A measles alert has been issued for the West Moreton area in Queensland, Two new confirmed cases have currently been identified in Victoria, and a total of 47 confirmed since January 2019. A measles alert has also been issued for Darling Harbor, and South Eastern Sydney after a man who recently returned from Samoa was diagnosed with measles.
As long as measles continues to circulate in the Pacific, no country, including our little nation can be assured to avoid importation. Please remain vigilant. Ensure your child is immunized or call Public Health (29 110) for more information, check your immunization status before travelling to affected countries, and immediately see the doctor if you are not feeling well.
