School holidays extended by a further 2 weeks

The Government today announced all schools will remain closed for now – the current school holidays will be extended by a further two weeks.

All primary and secondary school students are now required to stay at home until 19 April.

Earlier this month, the government brought forward the Term 1 school holidays to support physical distancing measures in the fight against COVID-19.

The ministerial order extends to childcare and learning facilities for the under 5s, as well as the University of South Pacific, the Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute and the Theological College.

“We’re doing this to keep our tamariki and their families safe from the potential spread of COVID-19. This is a necessary precautionary measure to keep our kids out of harm’s way. Staying home is the best place for people right now,” says Secretary of Health Dr Josephine Aumea Herman.

Dr Herman said the school closure order will be in place until Sunday 19 April 2020. The government will continue to consult its public health and education officials before reassessing and determining what happens after this date.

Financial assistance for families affected by school closures is available through the government’s COVID-19 support package. Details are available online at www.intaff.gov.ck
